Philippine Army Says Nineteen Suspected Rebels Killed in Central Clash

(MENAFN) The Philippine army has said that at least 19 individuals believed to be members of an anti-government armed group were killed during an armed encounter in the central part of the country, according to reports on Monday.

A military-run online platform, Kalinaw News, stated that the incident involved suspected fighters from the New People’s Army and took place on Sunday morning in Toboso, a municipality in Negros Occidental province.

The clash occurred amid continuing military operations in the area, which have also led to the displacement of hundreds of residents due to ongoing insecurity and fighting, according to reports.

Authorities have not yet independently confirmed the identities of those killed in the operation.

The incident reflects the continued low-level but persistent armed conflict in parts of the Philippines, where government forces regularly conduct operations against communist insurgent groups active in rural regions.
