Israel Plans Tear Gas Drones in West Bank

(MENAFN) Israel’s National Guard is preparing to deploy drones capable of firing tear gas in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, as part of heightened security measures for the upcoming Muslim holy month of Ramadan, according to reports from Israeli media.

The police tenders committee reportedly approved the purchase of three drone-mounted systems intended to release tear gas capsules, with a contract valued at roughly $49,000. These systems, known as “Surprise Egg,” are designed to be mounted on Matrice-type drones to disperse crowds from the air. Israeli police currently operate 19 similar devices.

Tender documents cited the acquisition as “urgent,” highlighting preparations “for expected events during Ramadan.”

The National Guard, established under National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir—a far-right official—has been described by opposition figures as “a militia effectively operating under his authority.”

Earlier reports indicated that the Israeli army plans to reinforce its West Bank presence during Ramadan, including the deployment of a commando brigade. In addition to the 22 battalions already conducting routine security operations, further units are expected to be stationed at checkpoints ahead of thousands of worshippers entering the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in East Jerusalem.

The army has reportedly recommended to Defense Minister Israel Katz that up to 10,000 worshippers be allowed entry each Friday during Ramadan, with separate guidance permitting men over 55 and women over 50 to attend.

Commenting on the measures, Sheikh Ikrima Sabri, preacher at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, told Anadolu:

“An aggressive plan targeting the holy site” is being implemented, and he expressed regret over Israel’s decision to limit access during Ramadan.
