Thai-Cambodian Border Meeting Ends Without Agreement
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 5 (KUNA) -- The Royal Thai Navy announced Thursday that no agreement was reached with Cambodia during a special session of the Thai-Cambodian Regional Border Committee (RBC) held in Thailand's Trat province.
Thai Navy spokesperson Rear Admiral Parat Rattanachaiphan said in a press statement that the first special meeting of the joint border committee concluded early on Wednesday without issuing a joint summary, despite being scheduled to run from February 3 to 5.
The meeting brought together Thailand's Chanthaburi-Trat Border Defense Command and Cambodia's Military Region Three, with monitoring teams from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) present as observers.
Rattanachaiphan explained that the primary aim of the meeting was to maintain communication channels, reduce field tensions, and preserve a sustainable ceasefire to ensure order and public safety along the shared border.
He noted that during discussions, Cambodia proposed several approaches and issues related to border demarcation. Thailand, however, stated that these proposals fell outside the RBC's objectives and were inconsistent with the substance of the December 27 Thailand-Cambodia General Border Committee joint statement, making consensus impossible on those points.
Thailand and Cambodia share a land border stretching hundreds of kilometers, which has witnessed recurring tensions and occasional limited military clashes over troop deployments, border points, and differing interpretations of past agreements. (end)
