Tens Dead as Armed Gangs Launch Attacks Across Three Nigerian States

(MENAFN) A coordinated wave of bandit attacks across three Nigerian states left at least 47 people dead Tuesday, underscoring the deepening security catastrophe plaguing the nation's rural territories.

Katsina State suffered the heaviest toll, with 20 civilians slaughtered when armed militants stormed Doma community in Tafoki Ward, Faskari Local Government Area.

Eyewitnesses described how attackers moved freely through the settlement, gunning down villagers and torching homes and vehicles before vanishing. Faskari Local Government Chairman Surajo Aliyu confirmed the massacre, calling it a lethal retaliatory strike—the most devastating in five months.

"This attack is a reprisal one, and it is a deadly one indeed. We have not seen anything like this in the last five months," Aliyu said.

In Kwara State, bandits executed at least 10 residents in Woro and Nuku communities within Kaiama Local Government Area. The assailants, allegedly operating from Borgu National Park forest in neighboring Niger State, descended on villages around 6:00 p.m., unleashing indiscriminate gunfire and setting structures ablaze.

A local leader verified the fatalities, noting numerous villagers escaped into surrounding wilderness during the onslaught. State authorities denounced the killings as a "cowardly expression of frustration" by terrorist factions reacting to active counterterrorism campaigns.

Benue State recorded 17 deaths, including a Mobile Police officer, when gunmen raided Abande market in Mbaikyor Ward, Turan district of Kwande Local Government Area. Attackers opened fire on merchants and civilians, killing many instantly. Police spokesperson in Benue State, Udeme Edet confirmed the attack.

The bloodshed coincided with a US announcement earlier Wednesday confirming deployment of a "small team" of military personnel to Nigeria under renewed bilateral security partnership.

As investigative and search operations proceed, traumatized communities mourn their dead and flee amid fears of additional violence.
