Spain Says Israel Uses Gaza-Style Tactics in Lebanon, Questions EU Ties

(MENAFN) According to reports, Spain’s foreign minister has accused Israel of using the same military approach in southern Lebanon that it has applied in Gaza, arguing that such actions are incompatible with normal relations with the European Union amid alleged human rights violations.

As stated by reports, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares told a public broadcaster that developments in Lebanon reflect a broader pattern involving restrictions on civilian life, destruction of infrastructure, and violations of international law.

He said the situation includes forced displacement orders preventing residents from returning, as well as exchanges of attacks involving United Nations forces deployed in the area.

According to reports, Albares argued that these actions suggest an attempt to establish control over part of a sovereign state, warning that such a trajectory could have serious consequences for regional stability and even for Israel’s own security.

He added that, in his view, the situation risks pushing the Middle East toward ongoing conflict rather than resolution.

As stated by reports, Spain is also calling on the European Union to suspend its Association Agreement with Israel, a position Albares plans to raise at an upcoming meeting of EU foreign ministers.

He further stated that Israel cannot expect a normal relationship with the EU while serious human rights concerns remain unaddressed.
