US Fighter Jet Shoots Down Iranian Drone Near Aircraft Carrier
(MENAFN) A US fighter jet shot down an Iranian drone on Tuesday after it approached the USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea, a US official confirmed.
“USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) was transiting the Arabian Sea approximately 500 miles from Iran’s southern coast when an Iranian Shahed-139 drone unnecessarily maneuvered toward the ship,” said US Central Command (CENTCOM) spokesman Capt. Tim Hawkins. He added, “The Iranian drone continued to fly toward the ship despite de-escalatory measures taken by US forces operating in international waters.”
Hawkins emphasized that US forces are taking measures to ensure the safety of personnel, ships, and aircraft in the region. “Continued Iranian harassment and threats in international waters and airspace will not be tolerated. Iran’s unnecessary aggression near US forces, regional partners and commercial vessels increases risks of collision, miscalculation, and regional destabilization,” he said.
White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt told a news agency that she had spoken with the Pentagon, which confirmed that CENTCOM acted “appropriately and necessarily” to protect US personnel and equipment. “So, CENTCOM did make the decision to shoot down that Iranian drone. It was unmanned; it was acting aggressively towards our USS Lincoln, which we know that aircraft carrier is in the region — at the direction of President Trump,” she said.
Leavitt stressed that President Trump remains committed to diplomacy, but added, “But in order for diplomacy to work, of course, it takes two to tango. You need a willing partner to engage.”
