Trump Sets Covert Deadline for Iran
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump on Friday implied Washington has privately set a deadline for Tehran to negotiate, but refused to reveal the timeframe publicly.
"Only they know for sure," Trump responded when reporters at the White House pressed him on whether Iran had been given an ultimatum.
Questioned about potential Pentagon plans to draw down U.S. military forces in the Middle East, Trump stated: "We'll see how it all works out. They have to float someplace, so they might as well float near Iran."
The remarks arrive amid escalating American military posturing toward the Middle Eastern nation, where widespread demonstrations have swept across cities since late December 2025.
Trump announced Wednesday that a "massive armada," led by aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, is advancing toward Iran, warning that "time is running out" for Tehran to strike an agreement with Washington.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated Friday that Tehran has continuously favored engagement and dialogue to settle disagreements and is not pursuing military confrontation. He accused Western powers of demonstrating inadequate practical dedication to diplomacy and international law despite public declarations.
Iran's strategy, he explained, centers on "dignity-based diplomacy," engagement within the framework of international law, mutual respect, and refraining from threats or coercion. "Any aggression against the country and its people will be responded to immediately and decisively," he added.
Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi declared Friday in Istanbul that Iran remains willing to hold discussions with the United States, but not under threat.
Washington has demanded any agreement with Iran must incorporate a prohibition on uranium enrichment, removal of already-enriched uranium, limitations on long-range missiles, and withdrawal of backing for regional proxies—conditions Tehran has categorically rejected.
