US special envoy signals final stage of Ukraine settlement talks

(MENAFN) A senior US envoy said Thursday that negotiations aimed at reaching a settlement in Ukraine are approaching their final stage, voicing confidence that an agreement is within reach.

Speaking during a Ukraine-related event held alongside an international economic forum in Switzerland, the envoy said discussions had reached a decisive point. “We are at the end now, and I actually am optimistic,” he said, adding that "a lot of progress" has been achieved in talks between Russia and Ukraine.

He noted that he met Ukraine’s delegation on Wednesday evening, commending the team’s approach and cooperation. He said the two sides have spent "a lot of time together" since negotiations that took place in Geneva in November last year.

According to the envoy, the negotiations have narrowed to a single unresolved matter. “I think we’ve got it down to one issue, and we have discussed iterations of that issue, and that means it’s solvable. So if both sides want to solve this, we’re going to get it solved,” he said.

He also said that he and US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, are traveling to Moscow on Thursday evening and will later proceed to Abu Dhabi without staying overnight, where additional working-level meetings are planned.

The two are expected to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Russian capital.

Earlier, the envoy said at the same international gathering that there had been "lots of progress in the last six to eight weeks" toward a possible settlement in Ukraine, as stated by reports. He added that Moscow had requested the upcoming talks and expressed hope that there would be "something good to announce soon."

Both the envoy and Kushner have held several rounds of discussions with Putin and with Ukrainian representatives as part of ongoing efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war, which is set to enter its fifth year next month.
