Watch: Sheikh Hamdan Attends Launch Of First 'Hewi Dubai' In Nad Al Sheba

Dubai has taken a major step in a project that aims to build community spaces that reflect the essence of traditional Emirati neighbourhoods as the emirate's Crown Prince, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, attended the opening of the first 'Hewi' on Wednesday.

The word 'Hewi' is used in the Emirati dialect to refer to the 'outdoor courtyard of the house', a space for entertainment, relaxation and family gatherings.

The aim of the project is to create a new generation of community spaces that strengthen social bonds, encourage outdoor activity, support local families and their businesses, and bring residents of all ages together in welcoming environments.

"'Hewi Dubai' preserves the legacy of the traditional Emirati 'fareej' that our parents and grandparents grew up in – an environment that played a defining role in shaping their values and strengthening social cohesion," Sheikh Hamdan, who also serves as Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Dubai Future Foundation (DFF), commented on the opening, adding: "The quality of life of Dubai's residents will remain among our top priorities and the North Star that guides our initiatives.”

Located in Nad Al Sheba, the shared neighbourhood space was developed in collaboration between Dubai Municipality, Dubai Future Foundation (DFF), and 'Ferjan Dubai'.

'Hewi Nad Al Sheba' includes a range of dedicated spaces like:

• 'Al Decha': A calm gathering area located near the mosque

• 'Al Saaha': A flexible indoor-outdoor space that enables neighbours to host meetings, celebrations, and community events. Overlooking the children's play area

• 'Al Yalsa': A comfortable seating space for parents to relax while keeping an eye on their children

• A walking path that encourages reconnection with nature
