Pope Leo XIV Calls for Peace After US Venezuela Attack

(MENAFN) Pope Leo XIV issued an urgent Sunday appeal for peace and sovereignty protection in Venezuela following US military strikes and the forcible detention of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife by American forces.

Addressing worshippers during the midday Angelus prayer at St. Peter's Square, according to media, the pontiff voiced alarm over escalating developments, saying: "The good of the beloved Venezuelan people must prevail over every other consideration and lead us to overcome violence and to undertake paths of justice and peace, safeguarding the country's sovereignty, ensuring the rule of law enshrined in the Constitution."

He urged "respecting the human and civil rights of each person and of all, and working to build together a serene future of collaboration, stability, and concord, with special attention to the poorest who suffer because of the difficult economic situation."

Concluding his message, the pope invoked divine intervention, saying, "Let us continue to have faith in the God of peace," while advocating solidarity with war-afflicted populations globally.

According to media, the Venezuelan Bishops' Conference simultaneously released a Sunday statement expressing solidarity with the public and rejecting violence, calling on Venezuelans to persevere in prayer and unity and urging that all decisions be made "for the good of our people."

Venezuela declared Saturday that Washington attacked civilian and military facilities across multiple states before announcing a national emergency.

US President Donald Trump subsequently verified the "large scale" strike, adding that Maduro and his wife had been captured and flown out of the country. He later said the US will "run" Venezuela until a "safe" transition is ensured, and fix its "broken" oil infrastructure.

The military action followed months of intensifying US pressure on Maduro, whom Washington accuses of being involved in drug trafficking. The Venezuelan leader had denied the claims and expressed readiness for talks.
