Letter To Editor: Kashmir Checks The Forecast And Laughs Anyway
Every year, predictions promise snow, flurries, or something resembling winter. We wait, hope, and check the sky like it owes us an explanation. Most of the time, nothing happens.
ADVERTISEMENTThe mountains might get a dusting, the hill stations like Gulmarg and Pahalgam might sparkle, but down in the city, the ground remains stubbornly brown.
The funny part is how seriously people used to take forecasts.
In tea shops, on buses, and in WhatsApp groups, the conversation has shifted. Now, forecasts are a source of jokes, dark laughter, and mockery.“They said ten inches of snow this week,” someone says.“I think they meant in their imagination.”
ADVERTISEMENTEvery prediction is an opportunity to laugh at our own disappointment. The forecasters have become accidental comedians in a play that nobody asked for.
Tourists, of course, get a different story. Those heading to the hill stations sometimes find enough snow to Instagram about, while locals in the plains watch through windows, shaking their heads.
The contrast between snow-covered peaks and dry streets makes the situation even more absurd. People talk about it in a mix of disbelief and dark humour. Snow has become a punchline, and forecasts the setup.
The language of forecasting is almost performance art.“Snow likely,”“Chance of showers,”“Possibility of flurries.” It is a carefully polite way of admitting failure.
Residents no longer plan their week around the weather. They consult the forecasts to practice sighs, sarcastic chuckles, and mock horror. Some even record the updates and play them to entertain friends.
Climate change might be real, but in Kashmir it adds extra layers to the comedy. Snow that once fell on schedule is now missing in action, while forecasters continue with unwavering confidence.
People no longer expect climate accuracy. They expect comic relief.
The city has developed a shared understanding that weather predictions are mostly a game, and we are the unwilling audience.
