Czech Government to Audit F-35 Fighter Jet Deal
(MENAFN) The Czech government has announced plans to review the contract for the acquisition and operation of 24 F-35 fighter jets, Finance Minister Alena Schillerova said on Sunday.
Prime Minister Andrej Babis’ coalition intends to examine the terms and advance payments tied to the deal, valued at 150 billion Czech koruna ($7.2 billion). Schillerova told a television channel that officials are “studying the contract, the conditions, the advance payments, how they were paid, whether there was overpayment, and so on,” according to a media outlet.
Defense Minister Jaromir Zuna of the SDP party previously stated that his ministry would conduct an analysis, including the possibility of canceling the agreement. However, Babis’ ANO party, the largest in the coalition, has made clear it does not support termination.
Deputy Prime Minister Karel Havlicek has also remarked that the purchase of the F-35 jets is already a settled matter.
The original decision to acquire the aircraft was made in 2023 under then-Prime Minister Petr Fiala. That plan approved the purchase of 24 jets at a cost of 150 billion Czech koruna ($7.3 billion), covering training, equipment, weapons, and long-term support.
