Northrop Grumman Unveils Electronic Warfare Suite for F-16s

(MENAFN) US defense contractor Northrop Grumman has introduced a sophisticated electronic warfare enhancement for the F-16 Fighting Falcon, aimed at ensuring the jet remains "lethal and survivable" in contemporary combat scenarios.

To confront evolving threats, the firm is advancing its Integrated Viper Electronic Warfare Suite (IVEWS), a built-in radio-frequency defense system tailored specifically for the F-16.

This technology is designed to neutralize increasingly complex radar-guided dangers that span broader segments of the electromagnetic spectrum and employ shifting or mobile tactics.

The company’s corporate vice president and regional executive for Europe and the Middle East emphasized the aircraft’s enduring importance in missions such as air-to-air engagements, close support operations, combat rescues, and strategic deterrence during a media briefing attended virtually by a news agency.

Joseph Guastella remarked, "The F-16 has been the workhorse of the global fighter fleet for decades," adding, “But every one of those missions depends on survivability. If the jet can’t survive in a high-end fight, it can’t deliver its effects.”

Although fifth- and sixth-generation fighters like the F-35, F-22, and the forthcoming B-21 boast advanced features, representatives noted that these aircraft are produced in limited numbers.

By contrast, thousands of fourth-generation jets—including more than 2,800 F-16s—remain operational worldwide and are expected to continue serving as the backbone of air forces for many years to come.
