Syrian President condoles with Trump following ISIS attack
(MENAFN) Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa extended condolences to US President Donald Trump on Sunday following an ISIS (Daesh) attack that claimed the lives of three Americans in Syria’s Homs countryside, while reaffirming his government’s commitment to safeguarding security and stability.
According to official statements, Sharaa sent a message to Trump expressing sympathy over the deaths of three US nationals who were killed on Saturday near the historic city of Palmyra. The Syrian leader denounced the assault and conveyed solidarity with the families of those who were killed.
The statement further noted that Sharaa emphasized Syria’s determination to uphold public safety and reinforce stability both domestically and across the broader region.
In response to the attack, Syrian security forces initiated a crackdown on suspected ISIS cells in the Homs area on Sunday, resulting in the arrest of five individuals believed to be connected to the group.
According to US military reports, the incident involved an ambush carried out by an ISIS gunman in the Palmyra desert, killing two American troops and a civilian, while leaving three additional service members wounded.
US forces are deployed in Syria as part of an international coalition formed in 2014 to combat ISIS. Syria formally joined this coalition on Nov. 12, 2025. Since its creation, the coalition has conducted operations against ISIS targets in both Syria and Iraq with participation from multiple countries, although Damascus had not been involved in earlier phases.
Since the removal of Bashar al-Assad’s government in December 2024, Syria’s new leadership has been focused on reestablishing security and restoring stability throughout the country amid ongoing militant threats.
