Chinese FM plans diplomatic tour to UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan

(MENAFN) China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi is set to undertake a five-day tour of the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan this week, according to official statements.

The trip will start on Friday, with the initial stop likely in Abu Dhabi, following an invitation from Wang’s UAE counterpart Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, as stated by reports. Wang will then head to Riyadh at the request of Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud.

The tour is expected to conclude in Amman next week, where he will meet Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi.

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun emphasized Beijing’s “profound traditional friendship” with the three nations.

“During his meetings, Wang will exchange views on bilateral ties, the Middle East, and other issues of mutual interest,” Guo told reporters, adding that the discussions will focus on “consolidating” political trust, boosting “synergy,” and advancing bilateral relations.

Wang and his counterparts are also expected to discuss preparations for the second China-Arab states summit, to be hosted in Beijing next year. The first summit was held in Riyadh in 2022, according to reports.

The diplomatic tour comes at a time of ongoing international efforts concerning the Gaza Strip.

The region remains a focus following an Israeli-US initiative to establish a “Board of Peace” (BoP) to assist in Gaza, which has endured heavy casualties from conflict, leaving over 70,000 people dead and nearly 171,000 injured, most of them women and children, since October 2023.

Although a ceasefire took effect on October 10, violations by Tel Aviv have been reported over the past two months. Recently, US President Donald Trump announced that the BoP, composed of global leaders, will be revealed early next year. The board is a central element of Trump’s ceasefire plan for Gaza, though details regarding its membership remain pending. It is intended to play a supportive role in Gaza’s administration under the ceasefire arrangement.

The UN Security Council last month passed a US-drafted resolution establishing a transitional BoP and authorizing an International Stabilization Force (ISF) to oversee governance, reconstruction, and security in Gaza. The resolution received 13 votes in favor, with Russia and China abstaining, and permits the ISF and BoP to operate until December 31, 2027.

Beijing has highlighted that any post-conflict plan for Gaza should adhere to the principle of “the Palestinians governing Palestine” and maintain alignment with the two-state solution.
