George Tian
- Senior Lecturer in Law, University of Technology Sydney
Dr. George Tian is a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Law at UTS. He is an internationally recognised interdisciplinary scholar specialising in the regulation of technologies and international commercial law, particularly the regulatory governance issues associated with cross-border transactions. His recent research focuses on the ethical and legal risks posed by emerging technologies such as blockchain and AI and aims to align innovation with the public good through both technological and legal solutions.
Dr Tian authored the book Re-thinking Intellectual Property: The Political Economy of Copyright Protection in the Digital Era (Routledge, United Kingdom, 2009) and co-authored the book Australian Commercial Law, 2nd edition (Cambridge University Press, 2020).
He is a current Co-Chair of the American Society of International Law (ASIL) Private International Law Interest Group (PILIG) (2024-2027), Deputy Co-Lead of the Silicon Valley Arbitration & Mediation Centre (SVAMC) ODR Working Group, and Secretary of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) AI Governance Working Group. He also serves as a UDRP Panellist (Domain Name Arbitrator) at the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) (since 2011) and is a registered Australian Trade Marks Attorney (since 2009).
Dr. Tian was a Visiting Scholar at the Berkman Centre for the Internet and Society at the Harvard Law School (HLS) in the Summer of 2005 and a Visiting Research Fellow at the Oxford IP Research Centre, Faculty of Law, University of Oxford during the Michaelmas 2011.
