The Coca-Cola Foundation (TCCF), in partnership with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), has launched a pilot initiative aimed at improving Pakistan's plastic recycling system. The project is titled“Sustainability and Decent Work in Pakistan's PET Recycling Value Chain” and is being funded by TCCF with an allocation of 500,000 US dollars.

The initiative is being launched in the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT), which generates more than 3,300 tons of household waste every day. Nearly 79 percent of this waste is recyclable, yet a significant portion is lost due to systemic inefficiencies. The project agreement was signed in Islamabad and attended by Dr Faisal Hashmi, Senior Director of Public Affairs at Coca-Cola Pakistan, Jennifer Ankrom, Country Manager UNOPS Pakistan, and Geir Tonstøl, Country Director of the International Labour Organization (ILO), along with other representatives.

Under the project, comprehensive research will be conducted to understand the PET plastic recycling value chain in Pakistan. Waste pickers and waste handlers will also receive professional safety training. The project further aims to support the formation of formal cooperative groups of waste pickers so they may gain access to safer, better organised, and more dignified work opportunities. The ILO will provide technical expertise related to labour rights, worker protection, and decent work standards.

Carlos Pagoaga, President of The Coca-Cola Foundation, said the partnership demonstrates a practical commitment to strengthening Pakistan's waste collection and recycling systems while providing legal recognition and improved opportunities for waste pickers. Dr Faisal Hashmi said TCCF's support is a strong example of creating“shared value” within communities. According to Jennifer Ankrom of UNOPS Pakistan, the initiative will not only reduce plastic pollution but also play a vital role in helping waste pickers secure dignified livelihoods.

ILO Pakistan Director Geir Tonstøl noted that improving the PET recycling system requires more than technical interventions, adding that enhancing working conditions for waste pickers is equally essential. He termed the project an important step in that direction.

According to WWF, Pakistan produces nearly 2 million tons of plastic waste every year, of which 86 percent is not properly disposed of. The results of this pilot project are expected to pave the way for a sustainable, organised, and inclusive national waste management model that can later be expanded across the country.
