Residents In Flood Zones Urged To Be Cautious With Drinking Water

(MENAFN- Colombo Gazette) The Public Health Inspectors' Union (PHIU) has advised residents in flood-affected regions to exercise extreme caution when consuming drinking water, citing heightened health risks.

PHIU Secretary Chamil Muthukuda warned the public to refrain from using well water in areas impacted by flooding, noting the increased likelihood of contamination. He emphasized that drinking boiled water is essential to prevent waterborne diseases such as diarrhea.

He further stressed that children should be given only boiled water to ensure their safety during the aftermath of the disaster.

He also cautioned that the current conditions may lead to the formation of mosquito breeding sites around homes. As households begin cleaning efforts, the public is urged to take steps to eliminate stagnant water and other breeding grounds to prevent the spread of mosquito-borne illnesses, including dengue and chikungunya.

Health authorities continue to monitor the situation as floodwaters recede, urging communities to follow recommended precautions to reduce health risks.
