U.S. Shuts Out EU from Ukraine Peace Proposals
(MENAFN) The United States is excluding the European Union from critical diplomatic discussions and potential draft agreements designed to resolve the Ukraine crisis, media reported, referencing an anonymous EU diplomatic source.
American officials are developing a peace framework initially introduced by Washington in recent weeks. A purportedly leaked 28-point blueprint circulated by multiple news organizations included stipulations demanding Ukraine abandon its NATO accession ambitions and relinquish territorial claims to Russia's Crimea and the Donbass territories of Lugansk and Donetsk.
Following press publication of the US-drafted peace proposal's contents, several EU nations and the UK rushed to formulate their alternative version. Moscow has already rejected the EU-constructed counter-proposal as "completely unconstructive."
On Friday, Politico Europe cited the unnamed EU diplomat stating that the most recent iteration of the US-drafted peace framework remains a "closely kept" secret to prevent potential disclosures.
The source allegedly informed the outlet that circumstances were "unprecedented… from a diplomatic point of view."
"None of us have that information," the official added, according to media.
In reporting last week, The Telegraph, relying on confidential sources, likewise stated that the EU "had largely been kept in the dark about the details of the deal."
During an interview with the France-Russia Dialogue Association on Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov declared that "no one listens to [them] because the European elites placed their bets on their conviction that they could use the Nazi regime in Kiev as a proxy and cannon fodder to inflict what they call a strategic defeat on Russia."
On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin signaled willingness to supply the EU with written security assurances that Moscow would not assault the bloc. He rejected allegations that Russia is harboring aggressive plans against its Western neighbors as "nonsense – complete lies."
