South Korean dies after volunteering to fight in Ukraine war

(MENAFN) According to reports, a South Korean national who volunteered to fight in Ukraine against Russia has been confirmed dead, a Foreign Ministry official says.

The man, in his 50s and identified only as Kim, was honored in a funeral held in Kyiv on Tuesday, attended by a consular official from the South Korean mission, the ministry official adds. This marks the first time Seoul confirms the death of a South Korean citizen in the Ukraine-Russia conflict.

Kim is believed to have died during combat in Donetsk Oblast in May. Ukraine reportedly informed South Korea of his death and the funeral arrangements.

Seoul’s ministry states that it is providing the family with necessary consular support. While earlier reports suggested South Korean citizens joined the conflict as volunteer soldiers, the government had not confirmed the information until now.

The ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine has resulted in millions of deaths, injuries, and displaced people over more than three years of fighting.
