Russia Criticizes UN Resolution on Gaza

(MENAFN) On Tuesday, Russia stated that the UN Security Council’s approval of a US-drafted resolution concerning Gaza conflicts with international legal rulings on the creation of the State of Palestine.

The resolution, adopted by the Security Council on Monday, sets up a temporary Board of Peace and authorizes an International Stabilization Force (ISF) to manage governance, reconstruction, and security initiatives in the Gaza Strip.

Both bodies are scheduled to operate in Gaza until Dec. 31, 2027, pending further actions by the Council.

The vote concluded with 13 member states in favor, while Russia and China chose to abstain.
Since October 2023, nearly 69,500 Palestinians—predominantly women and children—have lost their lives, and more than 170,700 have been injured during Israel’s conflict, which has devastated large parts of the enclave.

Addressing the resolution, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that it does not provide the Security Council with the “necessary prerogatives to maintain peace and security.”

In a press release, the ministry argued that the resolution contradicts “generally recognized international legal decisions that provide for the creation of an independent and territorially contiguous State of Palestine within the 1967 borders with its capital in East Jerusalem, coexisting in peace and security with Israel.”

Highlighting Russia’s decision to abstain in Monday’s vote, the statement noted that this was influenced by the positions of the Palestinian Authority (PA) as well as Arab and Muslim nations supporting the resolution.

Russia emphasized that its abstention aimed to “avoid a relapse into violence and military action in Gaza.”
