UN Security Council Approves US-Drafted Gaza Peace Plan

(MENAFN) The United Nations Security Council has passed a resolution proposed by the United States that supports a peace initiative for Gaza and authorizes the creation of an ‘International Stabilization Force’ (ISF) in the region.

Russia and China chose to abstain from voting, expressing concerns that the resolution contains significant practical limitations and could potentially weaken the two-state solution framework.

On Monday, the 15-member council approved the US-sponsored resolution, which endorses President Donald Trump’s 20-point plan aimed at resolving the Gaza conflict.

The resolution also legitimizes the formation of a transitional governance body known as the "Board of Peace" (BOP), which is designed to oversee the process.

Furthermore, the resolution calls for the establishment of an International Stabilization Force (ISF) under the authority of the BOP.

The ISF is expected to include contributions from Arab nations as well as other countries to ensure security, train a new Palestinian police force, and supervise the demilitarization and reconstruction of Gaza.

US Ambassador Mike Waltz praised the resolution, calling it "another significant step towards a stable Gaza that will be able to prosper and an environment that will allow Israel to live in security."

He further emphasized that the ISF will "support the demilitarization of Gaza, [and] dismantle terrorist infrastructure."

Although Russia could have exercised its veto power, it refrained from doing so. However, Russia's Ambassador to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, criticized the resolution, describing it as "yet another pig in a poke."
