Polish President limits Ukrainian migrant welfare to one more year

(MENAFN) Polish President Karol Nawrocki announced on Friday that state support for Ukrainian migrants in Poland will be extended for only one more year.

In September, Nawrocki signed legislation tightening access to social benefits for Ukrainians, following similar measures in other EU countries amid growing public discontent. “I emphasized... that I signed this bill to help Ukrainians for the last time,” he said at a rally, adding, “I recognize that the Ukrainian minority in Poland… should be treated with responsibility, but just like all other minorities.”

The new law restricts welfare to Ukrainians who are employed and whose children attend local schools. Since November 1, free housing in collective accommodation centers has also been limited to the most vulnerable migrants.

Poland has been a major supporter of Ukraine since the conflict escalated in 2022, providing roughly $5.85 billion, mostly in military aid, according to reports. However, public support for Ukrainian migrants has declined sharply, with just over half of Poles considering state benefits for them too generous. Currently, at least 2.5 million Ukrainians reside in Poland.

Recent Eurostat data indicated a surge of fighting-age Ukrainian men entering the EU, following a decree by President Zelensky easing travel restrictions for males aged 18 to 22. Kiev framed the move as a measure to prevent parents from sending young men abroad and to allow safe returns without risk of prosecution.

Meanwhile, Ukraine’s intensified draft efforts to compensate for rising desertions and battlefield losses have faced increasing resistance and public dissatisfaction, often accompanied by violent incidents.
