Indonesia Landslide Death Toll Climbs to Six

(MENAFN) Fatalities from a devastating landslide in Indonesia's Central Java province have doubled to six, with 17 individuals still unaccounted for following Thursday's disaster, authorities confirmed Saturday.

M. Abdullah, director of the Search and Rescue Office in Cilacap—the district where the catastrophe unfolded—told a local broadcaster that rescue teams are pressing forward with recovery operations to locate the missing victims.

"Heavy equipment, including excavators, search dogs, and water pumps, is being deployed in the ongoing operations," Abdullah stated.

The death toll marks a significant increase from Friday's figures, when Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency reported three confirmed fatalities and 20 people missing in the Cilacap landslide.

Saturday updates from the National Disaster Mitigation Agency revealed that relentless rainfall and multiple landslides across Central Java have forced more than 90 residents from their homes.

Rescue crews continue to battle challenging conditions as they search through debris and mud for survivors in the affected region.
