Comau's MATE-XB Exoskeleton Receives EU Category II PPE Certification

(MENAFN- Robotics & Automation News) Comau's MATE-XB exoskeleton gains EU Category II PPE certification

November 14, 2025 by David Edwards

Comau 's MATE-XB exoskeleton has been officially certified as Category II Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) under EU Regulation 2016/425, confirming that the device meets European standards for worker protection and ergonomic support.

The certification elevates MATE-XB from an ergonomic aid to equipment that can be formally integrated into workplace safety systems and risk-assessment procedures.

Comau says this milestone will make it easier for companies to adopt the technology, ensure compliance, and justify investment in preventive safety measures.

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) remain one of the most common causes of workplace absenteeism, particularly in environments involving repetitive movements, manual handling, or sustained physical effort.

Comau positions its exoskeleton as a solution designed to help reduce strain in the lumbar area, support natural body movement, and limit biomechanical stress during demanding tasks.

According to the company, the certification offers several practical implications for employers. Category II status can support access to safety-related incentives and tax benefits in certain EU markets, while also helping to streamline internal documentation and external audits.

Comau adds that the device is lightweight, requires minimal training, and can be integrated into existing workflows without major operational changes.

For workers, the company says the certification can help strengthen trust in the technology by formally recognising the exoskeleton as protective equipment rather than an optional ergonomic accessory.

Comau describes the development as part of its wider approach to combining robotics, ergonomics and safety technology to improve well-being and performance across industrial settings.
