NY mayor Mamdani expresses desire to speak with Trump
(MENAFN) New York City’s incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, expressed on Wednesday his willingness to engage with US President Donald Trump to explore ways of collaborating for the benefit of the city, while emphasizing that any discussions harmful to residents would be firmly opposed.
"I continue to be interested in having a conversation with President Trump on the ways in which we can work together to serve New Yorkers, whether that be delivering on his campaign promises around cost of living or the many issues that New Yorkers have been sharing with me," Mamdani told reporters.
He noted that he has not yet received a congratulatory message from the White House regarding his election win.
Mamdani stressed that any proposals or conversations that could negatively impact city residents would be resisted. "But if it is a conversation to come at the expense of those people, then I will fight that idea tooth and nail, because my job is to serve this city," he said.
The mayor-elect criticized the Republican approach to working-class concerns, arguing that identifying problems without providing solutions is insufficient. "What scares Republicans across the country is the fact that we will actually deliver on this agenda, and the contrast is something that they cannot bear to witness," Mamdani stated.
He also highlighted his commitment to combating anti-Semitism, declaring that his administration "will stand steadfast with Jewish New Yorkers in fighting the scourge of anti-Semitism across the city." Mamdani promised to collaborate with the Jewish community not only to protect but also to "celebrate and cherish" it.
Additionally, Mamdani underscored the principle of legal equality, assuring that everyone "will be held to the same standard of the law."
