Trump cautions Mamdani to be nice in dealings with government
(MENAFN) Following his recent election triumph, New York City’s mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani received a warning from US President Donald Trump, who urged him to "be nice" in dealings with the federal government, citing what he perceived as an antagonistic tone.
"I thought it was a very angry speech. Certainly angry toward me, and I think he should be nice to me. I'm sort of the one that has to approve a lot of things coming to him, so he's off to a bad start," Trump stated during an interview with reports.
When asked about Mamdani’s remarks on election night, in which the new mayor said: "So hear me, President Trump, when I say this: To get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us," Trump described the comment as "a very dangerous statement."
"I think it's a very dangerous statement for him to make. He has to be a little bit respectful of Washington. Because if he's not, he doesn't have a chance of succeeding, and I want to make him succeed -- I want to make the city succeed. I don't want to make him succeed. I want to make the city succeed, and we'll see what happens," he added.
Reflecting on the broader election results, Trump said he monitored outcomes in "three pretty Democratic states" and expressed a desire to see the new mayor perform well, emphasizing his affection for the city: "I would like to see the new mayor do well, because I love New York. I really love New York."
Mamdani, 34, emerged victorious over independent candidate and former Governor Andrew Cuomo as well as Republican Curtis Sliwa, making history as both the first Muslim and South Asian to hold the mayoral office in the nation’s largest city.
A self-proclaimed democratic socialist, Mamdani campaigned on initiatives aimed at improving affordability and social services. His proposals include free public buses, universal childcare, city-operated grocery stores, rent-stabilized housing, and an increase in the minimum wage, according to reports.
