(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) WASHINGON, Nov 6 (KUNA) -- The United States announced late Wednesday the termination of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation for nationals of South Sudan, meaning South Sudanese who currently rely on TPS will have two months to leave voluntarily or face removal.
TPS is granted by Washington to foreign nationals whose home countries are experiencing "ongoing armed conflict, environmental disasters, or extraordinary and temporary conditions," and it allows those beneficiaries to remain in the United States lawfully and obtain work authorization.
According to a notice published in the Federal Register, the Department of Homeland Security said Secretary Kristi Noem "hereby announces termination of the designation of South Sudan for Temporary Protected Status" after concluding the country no longer meets the statutory criteria for TPS.
The notice added that following review of country conditions and consultations with relevant United States Government agencies, the Secretary determined that South Sudan "no longer continues to meet the conditions" required, and this decision follows other recent Trump administration terminations of TPS, including Afghanistan.
