Putin Vows Responsive Measures Against Nations Testing Nuclear Weapons

(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin warned Wednesday that Moscow will be compelled to respond if other nations proceed with nuclear weapons testing.

During a Russian Security Council session, Putin referenced his earlier parliamentary remarks, stating: "Back in my 2023 address to both houses of parliament, I noted that if the United States or other state parties to the relevant treaty carried out such tests, Russia would accordingly have to take proportionate responsive measures."

The Russian leader directed the nation's Foreign and Defense Ministries, along with additional relevant agencies, to develop proposals regarding preparations for potential nuclear weapons testing.

Putin emphasized Russia's commitment to the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), declaring the nation "has always strictly abided by its obligations under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) and will continue to do so until other countries begin conducting nuclear tests."

The statement follows U.S. President Donald Trump's directive to restart American nuclear weapons testing, with Trump alleging that other nations appear to be engaging in comparable test activities.
