EU Agrees To Cut Emissions By 90 Percent By 2040
(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))
BRUSSELS, Nov 5 (KUNA) -- President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen announced on Wednesday that the European Union has formally adopted its new climate targets as she arrived in Brazil for the UN Climate Conference (COP30).
In a post on X, von der Leyen said, "Ready for Belem! Just arrived to COP30 in Brazil with good news. The EU has just adopted its NDC for 2035, a 66-72% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to 1990 levels. A milestone on our path to reaching climate neutrality in the EU by 2050, and to keeping the Paris goals within reach".
The announcement came as the EU's 27 member states reached an agreement in Brussels on the bloc's upcoming climate objectives, following negotiations among environment ministers that included concessions aimed at securing support from hesitant capitals.
Under the agreement, the EU will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90 percent by 2040 relative to 1990 levels. Member states will also be allowed to use international carbon credits to cover up to 10 percent of this target.
The ministers additionally endorsed a 2035 emissions reduction target, set between 66 percent and 72 percent, which will be presented during global climate discussions at COP30.
Several EU countries, including Poland, the Czech Republic and Hungary, had expressed reservations about the plan, but their objections were not sufficient to block the agreement, which requires support from at least 15 EU member states.
The new climate targets form part of the EU's broader strategy to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 and to maintain its leadership role in international climate action at a time of increasing global pressure to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement. (end)
