U.S. Ramps Up Efforts to Mediate Humanitarian Truce in Suadan
(MENAFN) The United States is intensifying efforts to broker a humanitarian truce in Sudan after the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) reportedly reached an initial agreement in principle.
“Both parties have agreed in principle, and we have not recorded any initial objection from either side. We are now focusing on the fine details,” Massad Boulos, the US senior adviser for Arab and African affairs, said on Monday, according to Sudan Tribune.
Boulos emphasized that the initiative seeks a comprehensive ceasefire followed by a post-truce phase in Sudan, aligning with a framework outlined by the International Quad in Washington in September.
On Sept. 12, the US-led International Quad—including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE)—called for a three-month humanitarian truce to facilitate emergency aid delivery across Sudan as a step toward a permanent ceasefire.
The committee also proposed a nine-month transition period after the initial truce to establish an independent, civilian-led government.
Boulos clarified that no direct or indirect negotiations are ongoing between the RSF and the Sudanese army, noting that the US is steering the process through separate communications.
Describing conditions in North Darfur’s capital, he said the situation in El-Fasher is “very urgent and painful,” reaffirming Washington’s condemnation of attacks targeting civilians.
On Oct. 26, the RSF seized El-Fasher, reportedly committing massacres against civilians, according to both local and international organizations. Observers have warned the assault could deepen Sudan’s geographical fragmentation.
“Our primary concern now is to address the humanitarian situation urgently, then achieve lasting peace in Sudan and preserve its unity,” Boulos added.
On Tuesday, the adviser echoed these concerns on X, condemning “the horrific crimes against civilians in El Fasher,” and urging immediate action to protect civilians and end the violence.
His comments followed a meeting with Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, where the latest developments and urgent regional challenges were discussed.
The conflict between the Sudanese army and RSF, ongoing since April 15, 2023, has so far killed thousands and displaced millions, despite repeated regional and international mediation efforts.
