U.S. Proposes International Security Force in Gaza
(MENAFN) The United States has circulated a preliminary draft resolution to members of the UN Security Council advocating for the establishment of an international security force in Gaza, with a proposed mandate of at least two years, according to Axios on Monday.
A copy of the draft obtained by Axios described the document as "sensitive but unclassified," outlining a broad authority for the U.S. and other involved nations to manage affairs in Gaza.
A U.S. official told Axios that the draft resolution will serve as the foundation for discussions among Council members in the coming days, aiming for a vote to adopt the measure within weeks and the deployment of initial troops to Gaza by January.
The official emphasized that the International Security Force (ISF) is intended as an "enforcement force and not a peacekeeping force," drawing personnel from several participating countries and established in consultation with the Gaza "Board of Peace."
Under the draft resolution, the ISF would be responsible for securing Gaza's borders with Israel and Egypt, safeguarding civilians and humanitarian routes, and collaborating with a newly trained Palestinian police force in fulfilling its mission.
The document also stipulates that the Board of Peace would remain operational at least through the end of 2027, Axios reported.
Furthermore, the ISF would "stabilize the security environment in Gaza by ensuring the process of demilitarizing the Gaza Strip, including the destruction and prevention of rebuilding of military, terror, and offensive infrastructure, as well as the permanent decommissioning of weapons from non-state armed groups," according to the draft resolution.
