Trump Rules Out Providing Ukraine with Tomahawk Missiles
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has ruled out providing Ukraine with long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles for now, while suggesting the warring nations should continue battling until they're prepared to negotiate peace.
Speaking Sunday from Air Force One, Trump addressed questions about arming Kiev with the advanced weaponry after CNN disclosed the Pentagon had greenlit the transfer, determining it wouldn't substantially deplete American arsenals.
"No, not really. Could happen, could change, but at this moment, I'm not," Trump stated.
The American leader has delivered contradictory messages regarding Tomahawk provision in recent weeks without entirely dismissing the possibility. Moscow has issued stern warnings that supplying such missiles would sabotage US-Russia reconciliation efforts and inflict damage on bilateral ties without altering battlefield dynamics in the Ukraine war.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova addressed reporters Saturday regarding the CNN disclosure: "As the current situation and previous years have shown, it is clear that militarization and arms deliveries – especially to a terrorist regime – will not lead to a settlement. Moreover, such actions would contradict the campaign promises made by the current US administration."
Trump further indicated the Ukraine conflict should simply continue until combatants reach settlement readiness. When questioned whether a "final straw" exists proving Russia's unwillingness to conclude hostilities, Trump dismissed the notion.
"There's no final straw. Sometimes you have to let it fight out. And they're fighting, and they're fighting it out," he said, acknowledging the combat has proven exceptionally "tough" for both Kiev and Moscow.
Trump has consistently pledged to broker a Russia-Ukraine conflict resolution, reopening direct Moscow dialogue early this year. However, these discussions—alongside renewed Russia-Ukraine negotiations—have failed to yield breakthroughs. Trump has repeatedly voiced exasperation over stagnant progress.
