Suspect in UK Train Stabbing Arrested

(MENAFN) A 32-year-old British man is being treated as the sole suspect following a stabbing on a train in eastern England Saturday evening, authorities confirmed Sunday.

Initially, police had arrested two men—a 32-year-old and a 35-year-old, both British nationals—but the 35-year-old has since been released without further action.

"The 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in police custody," police said, adding that a knife was recovered at the scene.

The attack injured at least 11 passengers aboard a train traveling from Doncaster to London, which made an unscheduled stop at Huntingdon station to allow law enforcement to intervene.

An eyewitness told local media they saw a man with a bloodied arm fleeing down a carriage, shouting, "They've got a knife," as blood covered the seats. Another witness described passengers trampling over one another, with some hiding in toilets to escape the assailant.

A rail employee who tried to confront the attacker remains in life-threatening condition, while five other injured passengers have since been discharged, authorities said.

The injured worker's actions "were nothing short of heroic and undoubtedly saved many people's lives," British Transport Police added.

Officials said there is currently no evidence suggesting the attack was terror-related. Counter-terrorism officers are assisting investigators as they "work to establish the full circumstances and motivation."

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the "appalling incident" "deeply concerning" and urged the public to follow guidance from local authorities.

Defence Secretary John Healey told media on Sunday that early assessments indicate the stabbing was an "isolated attack."
