Former Israeli Military Lawyer Gets Arrested

(MENAFN) The former chief legal officer of the Israeli military has been detained as tensions escalate over the circulation of a video that purportedly shows brutal mistreatment of a Palestinian detainee by Israeli troops.

Maj Gen Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, who served as the Military Advocate General of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), stepped down from her position last week, acknowledging full responsibility for the leak of the disturbing footage.

The situation took a more ominous turn on Sunday when Tomer-Yerushalmi was reported missing, prompting a lengthy search by police on a beach north of Tel Aviv. Fortunately, she was found safe and unharmed, but authorities later took her into custody.

The controversy surrounding the leaked video continues to grow, as it was first broadcast in August 2024 by an Israeli news channel.

The footage allegedly depicts reserve soldiers at the Sde Teiman military base in southern Israel isolating a detainee, then surrounding him with riot shields to obscure the view as they reportedly subjected him to violent acts, including being beaten and stabbed in the rectum with a sharp object.

The detainee was later hospitalized for serious injuries.
