Kenya's landslide cause death of twenty-six people

(MENAFN) The death toll from a landslide in Kenya’s Rift Valley has risen to 26, while rescue operations continue for at least 25 people still missing after days of heavy rainfall, according to official statements on Sunday.

Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen said that 26 bodies have been recovered, and efforts remain ongoing to locate others still unaccounted for.

The disaster struck early Saturday in the Elgeyo Marakwet East region, about 320 kilometers (200 miles) northwest of Nairobi, during the area’s rainy season.

Murkomen stated on Saturday that preparations were being made to deliver food and other emergency supplies to affected families. He added that military and police helicopters were on standby to assist with transportation and rescue efforts.

Authorities have urged people living in high-risk areas to comply with evacuation orders as search and relief operations continue across the region.

Heavy rains in recent weeks have triggered flooding and landslides in multiple counties, leaving hundreds displaced and causing significant damage to infrastructure.
