George Clooney Reflects on Kamala Harris Replacing Biden
(MENAFN) George Clooney recently expressed that it was a "mistake" for Kamala Harris to replace Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee in the 2024 presidential election against Donald Trump.
However, the actor clarified that he does not regret publishing an op-ed in The New York Times in July of the previous year, which urged Biden to step aside from the race.
In the article, titled "I Love Joe Biden. But We Need a New Nominee," Clooney stated that while Biden had achieved numerous victories throughout his long career, "the one battle he cannot win is the fight against time."
These remarks surfaced following a backlash from Hunter Biden, the former president's son, who criticized Clooney for questioning his father's cognitive abilities.
Less than two weeks after Clooney's op-ed, Biden announced his decision to allow Harris to take the lead. In an interview with a news agency, the actor mentioned that, if given the chance, he would write the same piece again.
He emphasized, "We had a chance," and explained, "I wanted there to be, as I wrote in the op-ed, a primary. Let's battle-test this quickly and get it up and going." However, with no Democratic primary taking place, Harris received the nomination, only to lose to Trump in the election.
Clooney also shared his thoughts on Harris’s candidacy, stating, "I think the mistake with it being Kamala is she had to run against her own record. It's very hard to do if the point of running is to say, 'I'm not that person.' It's hard to do and so she was given a very tough task."
