Türkiye, Iraq Forge Stronger Ties with Water Collaboration
(MENAFN) Türkiye and Iraq took a major step to strengthen water-sector collaboration on Sunday by signing a “mechanism document” to finance joint projects under a broader bilateral framework.
Turkish diplomatic sources reported that Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al Sudani in Baghdad during an official visit.
Following the talks, Fidan and Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein formalized the “Mechanism Document for the Financing of Projects Under the Framework Agreement on Water Cooperation Between the Government of the Republic of Türkiye and the Government of the Republic of Iraq.”
Officials emphasized that the mechanism establishes the regulatory foundation to implement the “Water Cooperation Framework Agreement,” which was initially signed during Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s visit to Baghdad in 2024.
The agreement allows Turkish firms to carry out infrastructure upgrades and new construction projects focused on the efficient, sustainable, and effective use of Iraq’s water resources. Financing for these projects will be tied to a system linked to Iraqi oil sales.
Through this initiative, Türkiye aims to bolster Iraq’s water infrastructure while improving overall water resource management in the region.
The “Water Cooperation Framework Agreement” from April 22, 2024, together with Sunday’s financing mechanism, signals a strategic phase in economic and trade ties between the two nations. Analysts note that Turkish contracting companies could now access the Iraqi market more easily and pursue critical strategic projects.
Amid declining water resources in the region driven by global climate change, officials stress that long-term, cooperative solutions are vital. “Considering the decline in water resources in the region due to global climate change and the resulting water stress also felt in Türkiye, long-term solutions through regional cooperation are viewed as critical,” sources said.
