Twin 6.2 Magnitude Earthquakes Jolt Russia’s Kamchatka Coast

(MENAFN) Two earthquakes, each registering a magnitude of 6.2, shook the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia’s Far East on Monday, according to the local geophysical service.

The first tremor struck at 7:10 p.m. local time (0710 GMT), with its epicenter located 22.3 km below Avacha Bay, about 154 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, researchers reported.

A second quake followed at 8:44 p.m. local time (0844 GMT), centered at a depth of 36.2 km in the same bay, roughly 186 km from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

The region has remained seismically active since a massive 8.7-magnitude earthquake on July 30, which prompted tsunami warnings and a state of emergency in parts of Kamchatka and the Severo-Kurilsk district. Aftershocks have continued in the area.
