Ukraine To Take Part In Guatemala Art Biennale For First Time
"On November 6, the 24th Bienal de Arte Paiz – one of Latin America's key art events established in 1978 – will open in the cities of Guatemala and Antigua. This year's theme, 'The World Tree,' brings together artists from Central America, the Caribbean, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Oceania. At the invitation of the biennale's curator, Eugenio Viola, Alevtina Kakhidze will present her project 'I'm Still Drawing This War,'" the statement reads.
The artist's drawings, diaries, and a 360° film document her personal experience of the Russian-Ukrainian war. The project spans from 2014 – beginning with conversations with her mother, who remained in her native town of Zhdanivka in the Donetsk region – through the early days of the full-scale invasion and the liberation of the Kyiv region from Russian occupation, and into 2025, as the war continues.
"In my works, I talk about how my mother endured the war in a basement, and later how I did too, when the Russians were just a few kilometers from my home – and also about Russian imperialism," Kakhidze said.
