Professor Sathiya Susuman Appunni has completed an MA (1991-1993) and MPhil (1994-1995) in Population Studies from Bharathiar University. After that, he completed a PhD in Demography (1996-2000) from the University of Kerala, India, and worked as a Research Officer at the International Institute for Population Studies, Mumbai (2001-2005). After that, he moved to Ethiopia and worked as an Assistant Professor at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia (2006-2008).
Prof Sathiya then joined the University of the Western Cape. His research efforts mainly focus on fertility, mortality, and migration. Prof Sathiya has two decades of teaching and research experience in demography and population studies.
Prof Sathiya published over 110 DHET International peer-reviewed journal articles. Google Scholar citations 1579, h-index 19, i10 index 33, and the NRF C2-rated researcher. He collaborates with national and international institutions on research. Prof Sathiya attended and presented at more than 40 national and international conferences. 18 PhD and 52 Master's students have completed their theses under his supervision. In addition, five PhD and five Master's students are currently under his supervision/guidance.
