Report Urges IT Firms To Adopt Greener Travel Practices
Recommendations include flying economy, opting for non-stop flights, using trains or buses for shorter journeys, and limiting frequent flyer trips.
The report, titled“Urgency and Potential of Aviation Impact Mitigation in India”, was prepared by cBalance - a climate solutions firm that develops strategies to reduce environmental impact. It highlights that the IT industry is among the largest contributors to business-related air travel emissions in India.
According to the report, air travel produces 285 kg of CO2 per passenger over a 1,000 km journey, compared to 30 kg for trains and 70 kg for buses. This makes flying the most polluting mode of travel despite its speed and convenience.
To align with global emission goals such as the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), cBalance recommends IT firms introduce incentives like bonuses for employees who use low-carbon travel options and meet company emission targets.
Among eight major IT firms evaluated between 2019-20 and 2023-24, five were found to need stronger efforts to meet climate goals.
Wipro Technologies stood out as a leader in reducing business travel emissions, with its policies encouraging the use of trains for business trips.
For policymakers, the report suggests implementing aviation emission caps, imposing carbon taxes on air travel, discouraging short-distance flights, and investing in high-speed and regional rail networks.
The study also examined the social impact of airport expansion projects in Bengaluru and Tamil Nadu, noting displacement and inadequate compensation for local communities whose lands were acquired for development.
