Amy Anderson
- PHD Student in Art History & Visual Studies, University of Victoria
Amy Anderson is a PHD student and Jeffery Rubinoff doctoral fellow in Art History and Visual Studies at the University of Victoria. Before receiving her MA in Cinema Studies at the University of Toronto, she was previously employed as the programmer for Cinecenta, an independent repertory cinema in Victoria.
Informed by her professional background in film curation, Amy's doctoral project examines cinema's influence upon the contemporary spectator's lived relationship to time. Her research draws upon previous film and media scholarship, which observes that human bodies temporalize digital moving images in a nature that is unique to virtual mediums. Consequently, her research questions how the adoption of digitization practices in film archiving and preservation might reshape the sociological function of early cinema as historical document. Focusing specifically on early films captured in 19th century Canada, Amy's work ultimately questions how this 'digital turn' in early cinema might create unique pathways of critical reflection on Canadian history, as depicted and constructed in historical film texts.
