Kremlin Responds to US Sanctions
(MENAFN) The latest round of US sanctions imposed on Russia has been deemed an "unfriendly step" by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who highlighted that the move undermines the prospects for restoring bilateral relations between the two nations.
Despite this setback, Peskov emphasized that Moscow remains committed to improving ties with Washington.
The newly announced sanctions, which were revealed on Wednesday, mark the first such action since President Donald Trump assumed office in January.
These measures specifically target major Russian oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil.
The United States cited Russia’s alleged “lack of” dedication to the Ukraine peace process as the primary reason for the sanctions.
During an interview with Russian journalist Pavel Zarubin on Sunday, Peskov expressed that the sanctions were an "unfriendly step" that negatively impacted efforts to rebuild relations.
However, he stated that this should not deter Russia from continuing to pursue its goal of strengthening ties with all nations, including the US.
Peskov reiterated that the country must focus on what benefits it and ensure its interests are met.
In addition, Kirill Dmitriev, a close aide to President Vladimir Putin and the head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, shared his thoughts while visiting the US for talks with Trump administration officials.
Dmitriev remarked that "only constructive, respectful dialogue between Russia and the US can bear fruit."
He added that any attempts to exert pressure on Russia would be ineffective. Dmitriev further noted that the Russian economy remains in strong condition, citing a 4% growth last year as evidence of its resilience.
Dmitriev also warned the Trump administration on Friday not to repeat the failed approaches of former President Joe Biden in dealing with Moscow, which he believes have proven ineffective in the past.
