Germany Urges Immediate Halt to Hostilities in Sudan’s El-Fasher

(MENAFN) Germany on Monday urged an immediate halt to hostilities in the surrounded city of El-Fasher in western Sudan.

The Foreign Ministry conveyed deep alarm over the deteriorating conditions in a social media statement, referencing accounts of substantial civilian casualties as the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) advanced deeper into the urban center.

"We join United Nations aid chief Tom Fletcher in calling for an immediate ceasefire, protection and safe passage for civilians, and unimpeded humanitarian access," the ministry said, referencing Fletcher's prior declaration.

"El Fasher is at breaking point. People are trapped and fighting is advancing further into the city. Ceasefire now, in El Fasher, in Darfur and throughout Sudan," Fletcher said in a statement he posted on social media.

Intense combat erupted Sunday between the rebel faction and the Sudanese army within the city, according to the civilian-led El-Fasher Resistance Committees.

El-Fasher has endured relentless warfare for weeks between army forces and the RSF, following a coordinated multi-front offensive by the paramilitary organization, which has encircled the city from five directions in a bid to capture it due to its strategic significance.

The RSF has maintained a siege on El-Fasher since May 2024, while the Sudanese army attempts to break the blockade of the city, which functions as the humanitarian operations hub for the five Darfur states.

The army and the RSF have waged a civil war since April 2023, claiming thousands of lives and forcing millions from their homes.
