China Constructs First-Ever Wind-Powered Underwater Data Center
(MENAFN) China has finalized construction of the globe’s inaugural wind-powered underwater data center (UDC) in Shanghai, marking a significant leap in green technology. Located in the Lin-gang Special Area of the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, the project boasts a total power capacity of 24 megawatts, according to a state-run news agency.
The Lin-gang Special Area administrative committee disclosed that the venture attracted an investment of 1.6 billion yuan (approximately $226 million). Unlike conventional land-based data centers, this innovative facility operates using over 95% renewable electricity, slashing energy consumption by 22.8%. It also eliminates water usage entirely and reduces land use by more than 90%.
The administrative committee highlighted the project as a significant breakthrough in integrating underwater data centers with offshore renewable energy. The facility is poised to become a leading example of environmentally friendly, low-carbon advancements in computing infrastructure and showcases the effective local use of offshore wind power.
