Trump restates allegations of India reducing oil imports from Russia

(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump has once again asserted that India intends to scale down its purchases of Russian oil, following a recent conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Speaking to reporters at the Oval Office on Tuesday during Diwali celebrations, Trump said he had discussed trade matters with Modi earlier in the day, including New Delhi’s energy imports. “I just spoke to your prime minister today,” Trump said. “We had a great conversation. We talked about trade. We talked about a lot of things, but mostly the world of trade.”

He added that Modi was “very interested in trade,” noting, “He’s not going to buy much oil from Russia.”

India has significantly increased its imports of Russian crude since 2022. According to reports, roughly 34% of India’s oil imports in September came from Russia.

Earlier in August, Trump introduced a 25% tariff on Indian imports as punishment for New Delhi’s continued purchases of Russian oil, accusing both India and China of contributing to the Ukraine conflict through their energy trade with Moscow. The new tariffs came on top of existing 25% duties that had been imposed after the two nations failed to finalize a trade agreement in August.

Following his latest call with Modi, Trump said the two countries were working on “some great deals.”

The U.S. leader had previously claimed that Modi “assured” him India would stop buying Russian oil. Shortly after those remarks, Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal reaffirmed that the government’s “consistent priority” is to “safeguard the interests of Indian consumers in a volatile energy scenario,” emphasizing that this principle continues to guide the nation’s import decisions.
