Pakistan Continues Demolition In Karachi, Over 300 Afghan Refugee Homes Torn Down

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) Pakistan continues demolishing an Afghan refugee settlement in Karachi, with over 300 homes torn down during the second day of operations, according to local authorities.

Pakistani authorities have continued demolishing homes in an Afghan refugee settlement in Karachi for a second consecutive day, local officials said on Friday.

According to Pakistani media, more than 300 houses were torn down on the first day of the operation in one of the city's Afghan migrant neighborhoods.

Officials said abandoned and dilapidated homes were demolished using heavy machinery as police, interior ministry personnel, and the Karachi Development Authority (MDA) secured the area.

Karachi police said no one is permitted to occupy government land and that the operation will continue until all“illegal structures” are cleared.

Authorities say the demolition drive aims to reclaim public land and prevent encroachment, but Afghan residents have protested, claiming many of them legally purchased their plots years ago.

Rights groups have voiced concern over the demolitions, calling them part of a broader crackdown on Afghan refugees who face evictions and arrests across Pakistan.

Analysts warn the ongoing campaign could strain Pakistan's relations with Kabul further as border tensions rise following recent airstrikes and mass deportation orders targeting Afghan nationals.
