Migrant Boat Overturn Leaves Two Dead Near Rhodes

(MENAFN) Two people died and 19 others were pulled from the sea after a migrant dinghy capsized near the Greek island of Rhodes on Tuesday, according to the Hellenic Coast Guard.

An investigation is underway to determine what led to the vessel's sinking. The survivors have been brought to Rhodes for emergency medical assistance, though their nationalities remain unconfirmed.

Since 2015, Greece has served as a major entry route into the European Union for irregular migrants and asylum seekers. More than one million people have crossed through the country, with many tragically losing their lives in the process.

Fresh data from the European Border and Coast Guard Agency Frontex reveals a notable shift in migration patterns. Irregular entries through the Eastern Mediterranean route dropped by 22 percent in the first nine months of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024.

Roughly 37,200 arrivals have been recorded in Greek waters so far this year, with most migrants originating from Afghanistan, Egypt, and Sudan, according to Frontex.
