Strong Asset Base Positions India As Global Leader In Green Hydrogen: Report

(MENAFN- KNN India) New Delhi, Sep 29 (KNN) India is rapidly consolidating its position as a global leader in the hydrogen sector, with a strong emphasis on green hydrogen, according to data compiled by S&P Global.

The report noted that India's ability to emerge as a low-cost hydrogen supplier will hinge on maintaining its early momentum against international competition and securing long-term offtake agreements.

India's extensive asset base and policy push place it among the front-runners in green hydrogen development, the report said, highlighting the country's steady progress and growing influence in the global hydrogen industry, according to IANS.

Analysts underscored the importance of the National Green Hydrogen Mission in driving India's clean energy transition and bolstering energy independence.

Approved by the Union Cabinet in January 2023 with an outlay of Rs 19,744 crore, the Mission aims to establish India as a global hub for green hydrogen production, utilisation, and exports.

It targets annual production of 5 million metric tonnes by 2030 and seeks to capture 10 percent of the global hydrogen trade.

Indian developers hope to leverage cost advantages and geographical proximity to tap export markets in the EU, Japan, and South Korea.

Complementing these efforts, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on September 26 inaugurated India's first 'hydrogen highways' project, which involves setting up refuelling stations along strategic national corridors to support long-haul hydrogen-powered freight transport.

The government has also announced a Rs 100 crore scheme to support hydrogen-focused start-ups. The programme provides up to Rs 5 crore per project to pilot innovations in hydrogen production, storage, transport, and utilisation technologies, further strengthening the ecosystem.
